The deciding information is the earliest official public announcement by Justice Samuel Alito, the Supreme Court of the United States, or the White House that Justice Alito will retire from the Supreme Court, and an announcement from any one of these sources is sufficient. The outcome is Yes if such an announcement is made before January 1, 2027, even if the retirement takes effect after that date, and No if no official announcement has been made by then, even if it later emerges that he had privately decided to retire. The outcome may be determined early once an announcement is made, and otherwise becomes final at 11:59 PM CT on the day before January 1, 2027. If the source delays publishing information needed for resolution, resolution waits until it is published.
